Low Carb Italian Sausage Skillet with Mushrooms

With this low carb dinner recipe, you can have your main meal ready in 30 minutes or less! You could also use this Keto Italian recipe for meal prepping and make it in batches. To start, Italian sausage is sliced into pieces and cooked on your stovetop almost like meatballs. Then, your skillet is filled with a buttery mixture of mushrooms and spices. After you make a creamy sauce to go with the skillet, the meal is done. You can always add a low carb side dish to your Keto Italian sausage skillet to make a more complete meal.

What side dishes can I make?

Even on the Keto diet, you might want a little more than just one serving of this Italian sausage skillet. If you want to keep things lean and healthy, go with one of our salad recipes. This Keto Citrus Basil Side Salad is simple but high in fat. For an Italian side dish, try our Keto Chopped Veggies and Mozzarella recipe.

Is Italian sausage Keto?

Italian sausage is high in protein but it’s also high in fat. Your Italian sausage may have saturated fats, but that’s okay in moderation. When buying processed sausages, make sure to check the label for fillers. If your sausage contains gluten or wheat products, there will be some carbs in the sausage. However, Italian sausage can still be very Keto-friendly when eaten moderately!

What other vegetables are Keto?

Mushrooms are some of the most Keto-friendly vegetables you can eat. You really can’t go wrong with any variety. Other vegetables that are low in carbs are zucchini, bell peppers, green beans, snap peas, celery, spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower. You can try adding more veggies into your skillet to your taste, and to make the skillet more filling.

  • Step 1

Start by slicing Italian sausage (your choice of mild or hot) into round pieces the size of meatballs. Add the pieces to a skillet and drizzle the olive oil in. Set the skillet over your stove on high heat. Cook the pieces of sausage until they’re browned on all sides and mostly cooked through. You can adjust the heat as needed.
    Step 1
  • Step 2

Transfer the cooked sausage aside, but leave any juices remaining in the skillet. Return the skillet to your stove and slice cremini or brown mushrooms. Melt the butter in your skillet over low heat, then add the mushrooms. Season the mushrooms with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Cook the mushrooms down in the butter until they’re tender.
    Step 2
  • Step 3

Return your sausage to the skillet, and pour in the chicken broth and heavy cream. Stir the ingredients together and cover the skillet with a lid. Let the liquids simmer and bubble until they cook down into a reduced, creamy sauce. It will reduce quite a bit before it’s ready for serving.

Seems great so far. Just need a little more info on cool settings on steps 2&3. I’m cooking it now on step 3 and set my pan to med.
