Low Carb Mulled Wine
Any time is the most wonderful time of year when you’re drinking mulled wine - although it’s usually drunk during cold seasons and holidays. Maybe that’s because mulled wine has to be made by the bottle: so the recipe is meant for sharing from the start! Wine can be a Keto-friendly alcohol, so there are no changes made to traditional mulled wine. Follow this simple recipe for a basic mulled wine that hits all the classic flavors a good mulled wine should. You can modify the ingredients used or incorporate your own family recipe as needed. Remember, only include alcohol in your Keto diet if it has been approved by your doctor, especially if your diet is at a doctor’s recommendation. As delicious as it is, drink mulled wine responsibly.
Other mulled wine flavors
For an orange flavor that isn’t so strong, you can either reduce the amount of juice you use, omit the peels, or replace some of the juice with lemon juice. When choosing your spice bundle, choose spices that give you warm and nostalgic feelings. Cardamom pods are another common spice added to mulled wine. Don’t forget to check if your aunt has any secret family recipes up her sleeve!
Which wines are the most Keto-friendly?
Red wine is surprisingly low in sugar, and it’s safe to have a glass of red wine once a week on the Keto diet (with the consent of your doctor). The safest red wines to choose are dry wines, like pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. However, the difference is by about ½ gram of sugar, so don’t shackle yourself to just these wines.

Step 1
Choose a red wine that you prefer for your mulled wine. Some of the most Keto-friendly red wines are suggested in the introduction of this recipe. In this case, merlot was chosen, but you can really choose the type that suits your tastes. For taste, you may want to select a more full-bodied red wine.Step 2
Next, you’ll need to choose your spices for the mulled wine. You can’t use ground spices - you’ll need to use whole ones. In this recipe, cinnamon, clove, allspice, and anise were chosen. Like the wine, you can choose the spices that are suited to your tastes (ex: omit the anise if you don’t like licorice flavors). Think ‘warm and comforting.'Step 3
Pour the whole standard-size bottle of wine into a large pot on your stove. Peel all the skin off a whole orange, and throw the peels into the pot. Squeeze all the juice from the orange into the wine before discarding the pulp. Stir the brown sugar into the pot before dropping in your whole spices.Step 4
Cover your pot and bring it to a boil at high heat. Then, immediately reduce the heat to a simmer. Let the wine bubble over low heat for 30 minutes before removing it from the heat and allowing it to cool for 5 minutes. Serve hot.
