Keto Chocolate Butter Coffee Protein Shake

Include this protein shake recipe in your morning routine for as close to an “instant” breakfast as you can get. Choose your favorite Keto protein powder in the morning. Chocolate is used here, but you could make many different flavor combinations depending on what you have on hand. While you can’t use bananas to thicken your Keto protein shake, you can thicken with ice cubes for a frothy breakfast treat. Using cold brew coffee is what keeps this Keto BULLETPROOF® coffee recipe so short, but you can easily make your own cold brew by brewing your usual coffee and then chilling it. In fact, you could brew coffee the night before and have it cold and ready in the morning to blend into your shake!

What are some Keto-friendly protein powders?

Can you add any protein powder to your Keto shake or butter coffee? Not quite. Some protein powders that don’t specify being Keto are still acceptable, but you’ll need to check the nutrition labels of your purchases. A quick search online for “Keto protein powders” will bring up a list of choices. What makes a protein powder Keto is its modified protein content as well as the addition of collagen. You can also find plant-based Keto protein powders without the addition of collagen. Most options come in classic vanilla or chocolate. Adding protein powder to your butter coffee hits all the necessary checkmarks in your morning: satiating protein, energizing fat, and just a smidge of caffeine to put the pep in your step.

The vegetarian’s Keto lifesaver

The Keto diet can be extra tricky to navigate if you are vegetarian or vegan, but not impossible! Butter coffee shakes made with Keto protein powder and coconut oil can be your lifesaver! Choose a plant-based Keto protein powder to avoid hidden animal products (but always double-check the nutrition labels anyways). Making a recipe like this supplies you with the 20% protein you need in your Keto diet. Adding in an extra tablespoon of coconut oil includes the extra fat you need in your diet, but coconut oil is also great for a shake’s thick and smooth texture. If you’re a vegetarian on the Keto diet, you’ll need a recipe like this protein shake in your regular arsenal of meals.

Can you use instant coffee in this Keto coffee recipe?

While this recipe calls for freshly brewed coffee, you can definitely substitute it for espresso or instant coffee dissolved in hot water.

I can’t get over the texture. I think it’s the coconut oil. It just doesn’t seem to combine good and looks curdled on the top just like in this picture.

Add hot coffee instead of cold and it’s just like a hot chocolate drink.
