Can this recipe be made without using an ice cream maker? Can another sweetener be substituted?

Check YouTube, there’s a way to make ice cream using two bowls, the smaller one should be metal. Just need some ice and salt and enough space for that and the small bowl in the larger bowl. Also, you should be able to use any sweetener you prefer but the taste may be slightly different.
