Keto Fried Halloumi Mushroom Poutine
If you’ve never had poutine before, it’s typically made with potato french fries (or “chips”). A brown gravy sometimes made with duck or another kind of poultry is poured over the fries, then, gooey melted cheese curds are sprinkled on top. This take on poutine uses Keto fried halloumi cheese with mushrooms. It tastes just like poutine but with a fraction of the carbs! Halloumi is cut into “fries,” then fried in healthy avocado oil. The fries are topped with a mushroom gravy made with chicken broth. If you are vegetarian, you can simply swap the chicken broth for vegetable broth for a completely vegetarian meal. Who doesn’t like fried cheese? Keto or not, just about any adult or kid will enjoy this Keto fried halloumi recipe.
Please note
Please note that you will need more avocado oil than what is listed in the ingredients for this recipe. You’ll need enough avocado oil to fill a frying pan by at least 1-inch. However, since you won’t be consuming this excess oil, it’s not listed in the ingredients. This way, your macros are accurate when logging the recipe in your food log.
Are mushrooms Keto?
Mushrooms are very Keto-friendly and you’ll see them used frequently in Carb Manager recipes. They’re one of the most low-carb vegetables you can have on the Keto diet. The other good thing is most mushrooms are interchangeable because they all share similar macros. If you ever need to make a substitution, use what’s on hand!
What is halloumi?
Halloumi is typically a goat or sheep’s milk-based cheese, but it can also be made with cow’s milk. Halloumi is popular because of its semi-hard texture. It’s perfect for retaining heat without melting like other cheeses made with cow’s milk. You can bake and fry halloumi cheese and it will still be solid!

Step 1
Dice mushrooms into small pieces to start. Melt the butter in a non-stick skillet over low heat, then add the mushrooms. Cover the skillet and cook the diced mushrooms down until they’re tender.Step 2
Next, pour chicken broth and heavy cream into the skillet. Season the pan with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme. Bring the skillet to a simmer, then let the ingredients bubble and reduce until you have a thickened, creamy mushroom sauce.Step 3
Set the mushroom sauce aside to thicken. Prepare halloumi cheese by slicing it into long strips, much like french fries, if it’s not already purchased in strips. Use a paper towel to absorb excess moisture from the cheese.Step 4
Heat avocado oil in a new, large skillet over medium-high heat. You’ll need to use enough oil to just cover the cheese, but this excess oil won’t be consumed. When the oil is hot for frying, drop in strips of halloumi cheese. Use a pair of tongs to keep the cheese from sticking to the bottom of your pan and remove them once they’ve fried to golden.Step 5
Once all the halloumi cheese has fried up, you may want to absorb some extra oil from the cheese with a paper towel. Arrange the fried halloumi “fries” in dishes. Top the warm halloumi with the mushroom sauce. If necessary, you can reheat the mushroom sauce for serving. Top with chopped parsley if you wish!
