Keto Feijoada

Brazilian Feijoada is considered the national dish of Brazil. While this dish originated in Portugal and gets its title from the Portuguese name for 'beans' feijão, the traditional dish is not Keto-friendly, as it is made with legumes. Thankfully, this dish can be made in a multitude of ways. We converted this recipe into a Keto-friendly option that is low in carbs and high in protein. The dish is typically made using black beans and salted pork or beef. These cuts can include pieces like bacon, pork ribs, or chorizo. The dish's contents are covered lightly with some broth, with the flavor being very meaty, kind of salty, and very comforting. It is typically served with rice. We have made our Keto-friendly Feijoada using pieces of stew beef, chorizo, and Kielbasa sausage. For the beans, we substituted them with mushrooms for a savory flavor. The dish is normally served on the weekends and is to be enjoyed leisurely throughout the day during events like soccer games or other social gatherings.

What other cut of meat can be used?

Traditionally, all kinds of cuts are used, like trotters, ears, and tails; however, we stuck to using meats typically found in American grocery stores.

What purpose do the mushrooms serve?

The mushrooms serve to replace the black beans in this dish which are not low carb. The mushrooms have a similar texture and offer a similar flavor.

How long does this recipe need to be cooked?

The dish must be slowly simmered until the stew beef is nicely tender. The broth will be level with the rest of the ingredients at the end of the cooking time. You don't want it extremely brothy but more stew-like. The goal is a stew-like dish that is easy to serve on top of cauliflower rice without making it soupy.

What is this dish best served with?

Instead of serving this dish with rice, we served ours with cauliflower rice. We like the texture of cauliflower rice, which pairs nicely with the spices and richness of this Keto Feijoada. You can top this dish with other Brazilian Keto recipes like Keto Molho à Campanha or freshly chopped cilantro. This dish can also be served with collard greens or kale.

To make the ultimate pairing, serve Keto Feijoada with our Keto Cauliflower Rice! One of our favorite recipes! We like to make our own cauliflower rice because you can make the pieces larger or smaller according to your liking.

  • Step 1

Chop the white onion into a small dice. Mince the garlic well. Set them aside. Preheat a large pot like a 5-quart Dutch oven over medium-high heat until hot. Add in the olive oil once the pot is hot. Add in the onions and garlic. Stir well until fragrant and the onions are translucent.
    Step 1
  • Step 2

Add in the diced mushrooms which have been destemmed. Cook until the mushrooms have browned. You may have to stop stirring the mushrooms and allow them to cook for a few minutes undisturbed. Season with salt.
    Step 2
  • Step 3

Next, add in the kielbasa, sliced thin. Allow them to brown in the same manner as the mushrooms. Then, stir well and continue to cook until they are browned all over. Next, add the chorizo and cook until no longer raw.
    Step 3
  • Step 4

Add the stew beef, bay leaves, and chicken broth. Cook over medium heat, turning down to low heat once the pot comes to a simmer. Allow the stew to cook for several hours or until the stew beef is nicely tender and the broth is cooked down.
    Step 4
  • Step 5

Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. The meats are fairly salty, so you may not need to add any more salt. Serve hot with cauliflower rice.
