Keto Butter Hot Cocoa

Mental note: never make hot chocolate without butter ever again! This Keto hot cocoa takes a classic recipe and adds a tablespoon of butter to make it high-fat. The rich flavor of the butter practically eliminates the need for added sugar, which is why you only need a small amount of Keto-friendly sweetener. Instead of high-carb chocolate, only plain baker’s cocoa powder is needed to make the hot cocoa rich and chocolatey (you can thank the butter for that too). Use a handheld milk frother to blend the hot cocoa, and you’ll have your drink made in under 5 minutes. Not only will the hot cocoa be rich and creamy, but it will have a thick and velvety texture without feeling heavy in your stomach. Your inner child will be pleased when they learn you get to drink your healthy Keto hot cocoa for breakfast!

Hot Chocolate Variations

Flavoring extract will be your best friend if you like adding other flavors to your Keto hot cocoa. Try adding just one drop of peppermint, vanilla, orange, or coffee extract to your drink for a fun twist. Stir the cup with a cinnamon stick for a subtle flavor. Other baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice can all be added in small pinches for zero-carb flavoring.

  • Step 1

For this recipe, it’s recommended you use a milk frother. You can find small handheld milk frothers for low costs. However, in lieu of a milk frother, you may blend the hot cocoa with a bullet blender or hand emulsion wand. You’ll need to blend the hot cocoa in order to properly incorporate the butter and keep a smooth texture. Frothing the hot cocoa will also make the hot cocoa feel velvety and rich.
    Step 1
  • Step 2

Combine almond milk and heavy cream in a pot or heat-safe cup. Heat the liquids until they’re hot either on a stovetop or in the microwave. Once the milk and cream are warm, froth them for about 30 seconds. Add cocoa powder and powdered erythritol to the drink, and froth the drink for another 30 seconds. If you like dark chocolate, you should not need any more sweetener. If you like milk chocolate, include another ¼ teaspoon of powdered erythritol or add liquid stevia drops.

  • Step 3

Put butter in a heat-safe dish and melt it in a microwave for 30 seconds. Once melted, pour the butter into the hot drink and froth it for a third and final time. At this point, you may add other ingredients to the hot cocoa such as Keto whipped cream, Keto marshmallows, or extra flavors. Check the introduction of the recipe for recommendations on other ingredients to include with the hot cocoa.
